My name is Rishani

I am an artist and storyteller who gravitates to written and cinematic languages.

Born in Poland, I spent my childhood in a village in Central Russia and travelled the world before settling in Australia as a young adult.

My creative practice is informed by shameless curiosity, deep reflection, and a distaste for binaries. It’s rooted in the philosophy of a simpler life lived some distance away from the clamour of content, sensationalism, and pacifying consumerism.

I am captivated by the themes of fractured identity, belonging, language and its affect, sexuality, social constructionism, animal rights, feminism, and the grey pallet of ethics and morality. Endeavouring to hold judgements loosely, I take changing one’s mind as a sign of sanity.

I thrive in collaborative art bubbles, quiet shaded places and on stage. I wither in corporate structures, windy plains and shopping malls. I am most comfortable in oversized hoodies.

My biggest artistic influences are Agnes Varda, Derek Jarman and Jean-Michel Basquiat. My primary intellectual influences are Virginia Woolf, Donna J. Haraway and Michel Foucault.
